Cladding Cottrell Building University of Stirling The Cottrell Building at University of Stirling had problems with concrete deterioration, windows at the end of their serviceable life and general heat loss. The decision to replace all the windows and carry out a full aluminium overclad resulted from an options appraisal exercise carried out by the University and the design team. Important considerations were sustainability, extending the life of the existing building, reducing energy consumption and enhancing appearance. Following tendering on the basis of a performance specification and drawings establishing design intent, detailed design development was a collaboration between D & B Facades and BPA. The cladding and windows were constructed outside the line of the existing external wall and the existing windows were removed only when the new ones were in place. This avoided any need to decant and allowed normal work to continue in the building throughout the construction period. |
