COTTRELL BUILDING - UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING
The first phase of this project involved the removal of exterior concrete panels and the concrete nibs supporting them. This left parts of the fabric of the building exposed in a way never envisaged in its original design. The second phase involves overcladding the exposed parts of the building with a new aluminium cladding and a completely new timber/aluminium window system.
Scope
Forming a new, fully insulated, aluminium overclad to the areas exposed by removal of the concrete panels and replacing windows throughout
Purposes
To refurbish the fabric of the existing building to maintain its integrity
To improve the insulation of the walls and glazed areas to present day standards
To replace windows at the end of their economic life with new high performance, double glazed, weather and draft sealed windows
To reduce solar gain by use of solar control glass
To reduce energy consumption, save costs and reduce environmental impact
To restore and enhance the appearance of the building in keeping with its original design concept and in context with the vocabulary of new buildings on the campus
